Pushing Boundaries is an excellent collection of selected editorials written over a span of almost fifteen years. As the reader thumbs through the pages of the book, the author’s intellectual grasp of the subjects he is dealing with and the depth of his commitment become evident. The content touches on a wide range of topics from indigenous people to self-determination, gender equality, justice, peace, demilitarization, human rights and human security. We also find the perils of abuse of power and corruption at different levels are recurring themes in Aküm’s writing. His editorials are punctuated with awkward and difficult, yet profound questions. Aküm then constantly dives to the question on how people can take ownership and responsibility in the environment of conflict, structural violence and insecurity in which violence ceases to shock for long enough to lead to its rejection.
